Warriors put in the work at Coyote Challenge

Sterling College track and field traveled to Salina, Kan. to compete in the Coyote Challenge on Friday and Saturday, April 18-19.

The men had a strong showing, finishing fifth as a team.

In the throws, Blake Robertson and Brayden Kermode placed fourth and 23rd in the discus throw with throws of 45.34m (148-9) and 36.36m (119-3). In the hammer throw, Robertson finished fifth with a throw of 45.57m (149-6), Malachi Bell threw 40.02m (131-3) to place 14th and Brayden Kermode finished 25th with a mark of 35.14m (115-3).

Robertson and Bell also competed in the shot put where they placed 10th and 26th marks of 13.64m (44-9) and 11.60m (38-0.75), respectively. In the javelin, Landon Pfannenstiel made his debut as a Warriors, finishing 12th with a mark of 43.92m (144-1). Tod Mastin also competed in the javelin. He placed 15th with a throw of 41.37m (135-0).

In the jumps, Charles Jones and Maurice Gray finished first and third in the triple jump with marks of 14.71m (48-3.25) and 13.70m (44-11.5), respectively. Gray and Jones also placed third and fifth in the long jump with marks of 7.15m (23-5.5) and 7.05m (23-1.75), respectively. Other competitors in the long jump include Trey Dixon and Mastin who recorded marks of 6.86m (22-6.25) and 5.88m (19-3.5) to finish seventh and 20th.

In the high jump, Jones and Cedric Wilson placed second and fourth, respectively, with clearances of 2.01m (6-7) and 1.91m (6-3.25). Mastin also competed in the high jump, he cleared 1.66m (5-5.25).

Wilson also competed in the pole vault where he finished 12th with a vault of 3.60m (11-9.75).

On the track, Dixon and Camden Carr competed in the 200m dash where they placed seventh and 33rd, respectively, with times of 22.25 and 24.17. In the 110m hurdles, Wilson finished eighth with a time of 16.49.

In the 400m dash, Carr and Wesley Brantley placed 31st and 34th with times of 55.68 and 57.18, respectively. In the 800m run, Daryen Jefferson and Brantley ran times of 2:09.73 and 2:20.30 to finish 43rd and 52nd, respectively.

Jefferson also competed in the 1500m run where he ran a time of 4:21.12 to place 21st.

On the women's side, Aliya McClanahan represented the Lady Warriors in the throws. She threw a 37.35m (122-6) in the discus to place second, she finished ninth in the javelin with a mark of 31.63m (103-9) and threw a 10.20m (33-5.75) in the shot put to finish 12th.

On the track, Lana Rodriguez finished fifth in the 3000m Steeplechase with a time of 15:07.73.

In the 1500m run, Janie Perico and Audrey Blake finished 31st and 35th, respectively, with times of 5:41.06 and 6:54.04.

Sterling will return to Salina, Kan. for the KCAC Championships on Thursday and Friday, May 1-2.
