Sterling comes up short, losing 4-3 to Kansas Wesleyan

Sterling College women's tennis traveled to Salina, Kan. to take on the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes on Monday, April 14. The Lady Warriors battled hard but came up just shorts, 4-3.

Sterling came out slow, losing the doubles point. Giovana Gaboardi and Nadia Margaritov got the win over Kristi Henderson and McKinnley Evans in the no. 1 doubles match, 7-6. In no. 2 doubles play, Hannah Giordanelli and Greta Fankhauser lost 6-1 to Hayden Bellamy and Danielle Slack. Camila Castro Medina and Ana Alvarez represented the Sterling in the no. 3 doubles match, losing 6-4 to Alivia Sherer and Eliza Camp.

The Lady Warriors were able to battle back winning the no. 2-4 singles matches but were unable to surmount the comeback.

In no. 1 singles play, Alvarez took Bellamy to three sets, losing the first set 7-5, winning the second set 6-1 and losing the tie-breaker set 7-5. Margaritov won in extra sets in the no. 2 singles match against Evans. She won the first set 6-3, lost the second 6-2 and won the final set 6-2. Giordanelli also won in three sets against Sherer in no. 3 singles play. She won the first set 6-2, lost the second set 6-4 and won the third set 6-2.

Castro Medina took care of business in two sets getting the 6-3, 6-1 win over Henderson in the no. 4 singles contest. Brooklyn Kuhn represented the Lady Warriors in the no. 5 singles match, losing 7-6, 6-1 to Slack. In the no. 6 singles match, Fankhauser had a close two set loss to Camp as the two sets were lost 7-6, 7-6.

Sterling will be back on the courts on Thursday, April 17 in Kansas City, Mo. as they take on Avila University.
