Softball Falls to McPherson

STERLING, Kan. – The Sterling College Lady Warriors dropped two close games against the McPherson College Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs would hold off the Lady Warriors, 3-2 and 6-3.

Game One: (3-2 L)

The Lady Warriros would take the early lead, scoring two runs in the first inning. Singles from Vanessa Burnett (SO/El Paso, Texas) and Kaycee Carter (JR/Pinon Hills, Calif.) would get Sterling on the board, as a McPherson error would allow another score for the Lady Warriors to make it 2-0. The Bulldogs would then score a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings to take the 3-2 lead, as Sterling looked to answer back. The Lady Warriors would get hits late from Bailey Bodkin (SR/Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) and Julisa Rodriguez (SR/Susanville, Calif.), but McPherson would hold on to their lead to take the first game over Sterling, 3-2.

Bailey Bodkin led SC with two hits, while Teanne Edens (JR/Cloverdale, Calif.) finished with seven strikeouts in the contest.

Game Two: (6-3 L)

McPherson would strike first, scoring a run in the top of the second innign, but an RBI single from Brennah Jimenez (FR/Rio Rancho, N.M.) would score Tiah Grass (SR/Pendleton, Ore.) for the Lady Warriors to tie the game at 1-1. McPherson would then put together back-to-back innings with two runs to jump ahead 5-1 heading into the fifth. Another score for the Bulldogs would make it 6-1, but base hits from Vanessa Burnett, Bailey Bodkin, and Kaycee Carter would help the Lady Warriors score a run in the fifth to make it 6-2. Sterling would have a final chance to extend the game in the seventh, as key hits from Kaycee Carter, Tiah Grass, and Julisa Rodriguez would add another run for SC to make it 6-3. However, the Bulldogs would come up with three outs to hold off Sterling late, defeating the Lady Warriors, 6-3.

Kaycee Carter and Julisa Rodriguez each had two hits for SC, while Brennah Jimenez finished with two RBIs. Teanne Edens finished with five striekouts in the circle for Sterling, while Moriah Payton (JR/McCook, Neb.) added tw.

Sterling (13-12, 7-11) is in action today against the Central Christian College Tigers at 5 and 7 p.m. The Lady Warriors will then head to McPherson to face the Tigers again on Friday, April 19th in a doubleheader at 11 a.m. Sterling will then finish the weekend in Kansas City, as they head to Avila University to take on the Eagles at 1 and 3 p.m.
