Sterling faces tough opponents in Lawrence

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Sterling College men's tennis took on two tough match ups on Friday and Saturday, March 6-7. The Warriors started with a 6-1 loss to Baker on Friday, followed by a 7-0 loss to William Wood on Saturday.

The Wildcats started by sweeping the doubles points. Pedro Felipoff and Fernando Vargas took on Jhon Ramirez and Corvin Christ, losing 6-1 in No. 1 doubles. In No. 2 doubles, Rubem Bogomoltz and Kazuki Fukushima lost 6-4 to Arturo Nunez and River Flaska. Ibrahim Curtis-Kaduma and Cassidy Kelly rounded out the field in No. 3 doubles taking on Immo Ferger and Carlos Alcala and coming up short, 5-0.

Fukushima was able to get the lone point for the Warriors with a 8-9(5) win over Flaska in No. 5 singles play. In No. 1 singles, Felipoff took on Ramirez coming up short 6-1, 6-2. Vargus dropped the No. 2 singles match, 6-3, 6-4, Ferger. In No. 3 singles, Adam King took on Christ coming up just short 6-4, 6-4. Bogomoltz and Nunez had a battle in No. 4 singles but the Warrior came up short 6-4, 6-1. Curtis-Kaduma closed out the field with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Alcala in No. 6 singles.

Despite the tough loss, Sterling came back the next day ready to battle with No. 18 ranked William Wood but against came up short.

The Owls started by claiming the doubles point with a sweep. King and Vargas took on Tobias Hajek and Cole Horton in the No. 1 doubles match, losing 6-3. In No. 2 doubles, Fukushima and Bogomoltz lost the No. 2 doubles match 6-2 to Thomas Geukemeijer and Jesper Seger. Kelly and Curtis-Kaduma had a 6-0 loss in the No. 3 doubles match to Bruno Matta and Paulo Lopes Ferreira.

In No. 1 singles play, Felipoff took on Duarte Melo, coming up just short 7-5, 6-2. Vargas took on Noah Burton in the No. 2 singles match where Vargas was able to take on set 6-2, but lost the second set 6-2 and the tie breaker 10-7. In No. 3 singles, King had a 6-2, 6-2 loss to Geukemeijer while Bogomoltz went 6-0, 6-0 in a loss to Tomas Guadagni in the No. 4 singles match. Fukushima also pulled off the upset over Lopes Ferreira in the No. 5 singles match but fell short, 7-6, 6-4. Kelly closed out the field with a 6-0, 6-0 loss to Alexander Hristov in the No. 6 singles match.

Sterling (1-3) will open up conference play this week against McPherson College (2-2) in McPherson, Kan. on Thursday, March 12 at 3 p.m.
