Men’s Soccer Gets Back to Winning Ways

Sterling, Kan. – It was 2 weeks of waiting for Warrior men's soccer who came out with a fiery start to the KCAC season, but hit a lull as October began. It seems like they have corrected the path and are back to their winning ways. Sterling hosted, and defeated, the Southwestern College Moundbuilders Friday afternoon in their Homecoming game by final score of 3-1.

Jonathan Torres got things rolling for the Warriors in the 31st minute, taking a cross from Stevy Kama and subsequently finding the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. Sterling earned another goal just 8 minutes later when Matt Dale found the net on a pass from Ruben Guzman, who has been the Warriors biggest threat in recent matches.

You've heard it said that a 2-0 lead is the most dangerous in soccer, and it almost proved to be just that. With just under 2 minutes remaining in the first half, Southwestern cut the Warrior lead in half getting their first, and what turned out to be their only, goal of the match. That goal was in the 44th minute, and Sterling took a 2-1 lead into the break.

It was a windy day to say the least, but the Warriors were not able to do much with the wind at their backs. They were much more offensive minded in their second half scheme, but the goal was hard to find, but not impossible. Leading 2-1 most of the second half, Matt Dale tacked on his second goal of the game with the assist going to Jonathan Torres. The security goal with 12 minutes to play in regulation was all that Sterling needed to add to the win column.

Sterling was definitely the aggressor in the second half taking 11 of their 15 shots in the final 45 minutes. They also won the corner kick battle 7-6.

Sterling is now 9-5-1 (6-3-1) this season and sit in 5th place in the KCAC standings after the rough start to October. There are three games remaining before the end of the regular season and two of Sterling's final three games are against teams currently below them in the league standings.

Their next game is Friday, October 20, at 5:30 pm in Springfield, Mo. They take on the Evangel Valor in the first meeting in the KCAC for these two teams.
