Gary Kempf enters his fifth year as the Sterling College Athletic Director. As the AD, Gary oversees all athletic programs, manage general department operations, and donor development for athletics. Gary also serves as a member of the president’s cabinet.
Gary oversees all of Sterling’s NAIA collegiate athletic programs including: men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, men’s and women’s soccer, football, cheerleading, softball, volleyball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s cross-country, and men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. He is continually working on facility development for Sterling College. He is a member of the emergency preparedness committee, campus security committee, student success committee and served on the strategic planning task force.
Prior to his service at Sterling College, Gary worked at Asbury University for six years as athletic director for the Eagles. While at Asbury, he helped oversee the updating and renovation of three different facilities and was instrumental in adding baseball, softball, and golf to the Asbury program. Under his leadership, Asbury grew from 120 to 310 student-athletes. Gary and his wife, Dorothy, also coached Asbury Swimming and Diving together and built the program into a nationally ranked NAIA program.
Before Asbury, Gary spent 33 years at the University of Kansas as an athlete, coach, and administrator. He was a very successful intercollegiate swimmer, then coached women’s swimming and diving for 24 years and men’s swimming and diving for 17 years. As an assistant athletic director, he was highly involved with fundraising and facility construction. Gary was inducted into the KU Hall of Fame in 1998.
Gary lives in Sterling with his wife Dorothy. Gary and Dorothy have two children, Paul and Faith. Paul graduated from SC in 2010 and is to married to Samantha (Meyer ‘10) and have a son, Gary’s grandson, Meyer. Faith graduated from Gardner-Webb University in 2015.
