HUTCHINSON, Kan.– In game three of the KCAC Baseball Championship Tournament, the No. 1 seeded Sterling College Warriors took care of the No. 4 seeded University of Saint Mary 8-3 behind a strong showing by Tyler Deutscher on the mound. The Warriors put together 11 hits compared to Saint Mary's five hits to advance to play No. 2 seeded Tabor College tomorrow at 3:00 pm in the first semi-final of the tournament. Saint Mary will play the winner of Ottawa/Kansas Wesleyan at 11:00 am tomorrow.
The Warriors took control of the game early, jumping ahead of the Spires 6-0 before Saint Mary would plate its first run in the top of the sixth inning. Sterling would add two runs in the bottom of the seventh and Saint Mary would add two runs in the top of the ninth to get to the 8-3 final score.
Deutscher pitched the complete game for Sterling, going 9.0 innings and giving up three runs, all unearned, on five hits with one strikeout to earn the win.
At the plate, Sterling was led by current NAIA Player of the Week Joe Williams, who went four for five with three RBI, three runs scored, two doubles, and one home run. Daniel Hall went two for four for SC with one RBI.
Jake Wolf took the loss for the Spires. Wolf pitched 1.0 innings, giving up four runs, all earned, on three hits. Jon Surratt gave USM 5.2 innings of relief, giving up four runs, three earned, on seven hits with three strikeouts.
Saint Mary was led at the plate by Matt Corigliano who went two for four. Michael Ferracuti went one for three for USM with an RBI.
With the win, Sterling advances to play Tabor College tomorrow at 3:00 pm while Saint Mary will play tomorrow at 11:00 am against the winner of the game between Ottawa and Kansas Wesleyan.
Sterling is now 41-12 while Saint Mary is 24-28.
