STERLING, Kan. – The Sterling College Warrior baseball team had a setback on Friday afternoon, splitting the home half of a four game KCAC series with the Bethany College Swedes. Sterling lost the front end of the double header by a score of 0-1 then came back and won the second game 4-1.
In the first game, Sterling was able to put 11 base runners on base with nine hits, one walk, and a hit batter. With those 11 runners, SC was unable to score. Three Warriors grounded into double plays while another two Warriors were picked off or caught stealing. Another six Warriors were left on base.
Bethany's winning run in the first game came on a hit and run single with a runner, Jose Sermo, at first. An error by the Warrior outfield allowed the Sermo to score on the play.
Levi LeBass (7-2, 2.32 ERA) pitched a complete game and picked up the loss for the Warriors. LeBass threw 7.0 innings, giving up one unearned run while striking out seven in 93 pitches.
Chris Drake got the win for Bethany by throwing 5.2 scoreless innings. Montana Prim earned the save.
Jared Forbush led Sterling from the plate, going three for three in the game.
Sterling turned it around in game two. The Warriors scored four runs on six hits to beat Bethany 4-1.
The go ahead run was delivered by Matt Krause who had runners at second and third in a 1-1 tie during the bottom of the fifth. Krause delivered a two run single to give SC the lead. Tom Schwartz added a solo homerun for insurance in the bottom of the sixth during the Warrior victory.
Daniel Cloteaux (8-1, 1.94 ERA) received the win in a complete game. Cloteaux pitched 7.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out four.
Krause led SC at the plate, going one for three with two RBI's and a run scored.
After the games, SC is 33-9, 14-4 in the KCAC. Sterling will take on Bethany again on Saturday in the second half of the four game series.
