STERLING, KAN. – The Sterling College Warriors continued their series against the University of Saint Mary Spires on Saturday afternoon to close out the regular season. The two teams would split the doubleheader, with Sterling taking the first game, 3-2, while Saint Mary finished with a win in the second game, 7-4.

Game 1:

Sterling took a 1-0 lead after the second inning behind an RBI single from Jake Schimenz to score Kyle Ulanday. The two teams battled back and forth, with neither finding a way to break through to score. The strong pitching of both teams continued to hold the score at 1-0, throughout the game, until Saint Mary would add a run in the top of the eighth inning, making it 1-1. After a scoreless inning for both teams in the ninth, the game headed to extras, as the Spires scored early in the tenth inning to take a 2-1 lead. However, Sterling would rally back, taking advantage of errors in the field from the Spires, as Nicholas Domitrovich would score to tie the game, 2-2. With the bases loaded and no outs, an RBI single to right field by Eddie Juarez scored the game-winning run, as Sterling defeated Saint Mary in the first game, 3-2.

Kyle Ulanday and Eddie Juarez each had three hits in the game for the Warriors, while Jake Schimenz had the lone RBI for Sterling in the win. Miceal Taylor finished the game on the mound for the Warriors to pick up the win, while Jerrott Gray did his damage early finishing with eight Ks for the Warriors in the victory.

Game 2:

Sterling again scored early, taking a 2-0 lead at the end of the third inning, using key hits from Kyle Ulanday and Nicholas Domitrovich to keep the rhythm moving for the Warriors. The Spires answered back, scoring two runs in the fourth inning to tie the game, but a single to center field by Ryan Sedillo would score Eddie Juarez, putting the Warriors ahead 3-2 after the fourth.

Saint Mary would continue to battle, sending a homerun over left to tie the game 3-3 in the fifth, but a solo shot over left field by Miguel Reyes in the bottom of the inning allowed the Warriors to retake the lead, 4-3 heading into the sixth inning. Down but not out, the Spire connected on four hits to score four runs in the sixth, jumping out to a 7-4 lead taking control of the momentum in the game. Sterling worked to try and complete a comeback, but the strong inning from the Spires proved to be the difference, as Saint Mary would take game two over Sterling, 7-4.

Kyle Ulanday had two hits for Sterling, while Ryan Sedillo, Miguel Reyes, and Nicholas Domitrovich all had an RBI. Kasey Biddle finished with two strikeouts, while Cristian Bracero added three in the game for the Warriors.

Sterling (35-16, 17-10) will continue their season at the KCAC Baseball Championships starting on Wednesday, May 3rd, at the Great Bend Sports Complex in Great Bend, Kan.
