SALINA, Kan. – The Sterling College Softball team traveled to Salina, Kan. to take on the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes, one of the top teams in the KCAC. The Lady Warriors and Coyotes split the two games, as Kansas Wesleyan took game one, 8-3, while the Lady Warriors finished strong in game two to earn a 6-5 victory.

Game 1:

Sterling got started early, behind a solo shot over left field from Tiah Grass to take a 1-0 lead after the top of the second inning. The Coyotes scored two quick runs of their own to take a 2-1 lead, but the Lady Warriors tied it up in the fourth inning with another solo blast over center field by Miranda Escalera.

Both teams were quiet offensively, until Kansas Wesleyan put together six runs in the sixth inning to take a 8-2 lead. Sterling scored a final run late, behind base hits from Nicole Flatley and Tobi Salzman, but the Lady Warriors struggled to put together a final comeback, as Kansas Wesleyan would go on to take the victory in game one over the Sterling, 8-3.

Nicole Flatley led the Lady Warriors with two hits, while Miranda Escalera, Tobi Salzman, and Tiah Grass all collected an RBI in the game.

Game 2:

Kansas Wesleyan scored in the first innings to take an early 1-0 lead, but the Lady Warriors answered back with a two-run homerun over left by Tiah Grass to make it 2-1, Sterling. The Lady Warriors would extend their lead in the fifth inning, after Chica Bati and Jessica Munoz reach base, only to be scored off an RBI single to right by Tiah Grass, putting Sterling ahead 4-1. The Coyotes added two runs of their own in the inning, making it 4-3, but two more runs late in the sixth for the Lady Warriors kept Sterling ahead, 6-3.

An RBI single to center from Miranda Escalera scored Jenna Weimer and Chica Bati, as the Sterling looked to finish the game strong. Kansas Wesleyan started their attack for the comeback, scoring a run in the sixth and again in the seventh to make it a single run game. Down 6-5, the Coyotes moved a runner to third late, but a strikeout by Hannah Loudermilk and two outs in the field by the Lady Warriors, ended the game giving Sterling the 6-5 victory.
