BARTLESVILLE, OKLA. – The Sterling College Men's basketball team took on the Eagles of Oklahoma Wesleyan on Thursday night, in their final road trip of the season. The Warriors would battle it out in the first half to hold a one-point lead at the break, but the Eagles would use a strong second half to push ahead and earn the victory over Sterling, 87-81.
Sterling would get started with a score inside by Fayola Oyatayo and three-pointer from Trey Dubbert, but the Eagles would answer right back with a quick 9-0 run to take an 11-5 lead early into the game. The Warriors would then go on an offensive tear, outscoring OKWU 24-7 to take a a 13-point lead. Sterling would get key baskets from Maurice Williams, Josiah Ray and Trey Dubbert, as well as big three-pointers from Isaac Ostrosky, Jake Jaderston, and Raybon Riden to put the Warriors ahead 29-16 with 7:45 left in the half. However, the Eagles would stay focused down the stretch, ending the half on a 16-9 run to cut into the Sterling lead, as the Warriors would lead 38-37 at the break.
In the second half, the two teams would trade baskets back and forth, keeping the tempo moving. Sterling would continue to get scores from Maurice Williams, Fayola Oyatayo and Josiah Ray as the two teams continued to battle. After a three-pointer from Trey Dubbert would tie the game at 61-61 with 9:44 left in the game, the Eagles would find a second gear to use a 15-4 run to take a 74-65 lead. Sterling would continue to fight, scoring inside with Fayola Oyatayo and getting key three-pointers from Maurice Williams and Jake Jaderston in the final minutes of the game. With less than a minute to play, the Warriors would cut the Eagle lead to five after a layup from Maurice Williams, but OKWU would hit free throws in the final seconds to keep separation from Sterling, and would go on to win the game 87-81.
Sterling's leading scorer was Maurice Williams with 21 points, while Fayola Oyatayo finished with 17 and Josiah Ray and Trey Dubbert added 16 and 10 respectively. Ray would lead the Warriors with 10 rebounds for another double-double, while Jake Jaderston would finish with a team high five assists for Sterling.
Sterling (7-22, 4-16) finishes up the season on Saturday, February 19th at 7 p.m., when the Warriors take on Bethel College for Senior Night.
